jan0515_classic03_tIt was “a trip of a lifetime”.

When Mike Caputo went into Shark Club Kamloops to have some beer and watch the game, he thought he was doing just that. But after about 20 (ish) drinks upon multiple visits, he collected all four coasters and entered to win an “epic experience”.

Out of hundreds of entrants, the Kamloops native, was selected to win a trip to Boston to watch the Montreal Canadiens take on the Bruins in the NHL’s annual Winter Classic event.

The 2016 Winter Classic took place at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, home of the New England Patriots. Mike and his wife, Linda, were mesmerized by the hockey backdrop and soaked up every moment.

“Coming from a small town like Kamloops and going to Gillette stadium ( that basically holds the entire population of Kamloops in it) is a little overwhelming,” he said. For reference, there were 67,000 people in attendance at the game and Kamloops has a population of 85,000. Whoa.

Days before Mike and Linda took off, Shark Club hosted a send off so they could celebrate with their family and friends before their big trip. They rung in 2016 in style, in Boston before attending the event later that day.

With brand new Winter Classic Canadiens jerseys in tow, they watched the Habs convincingly beat the Bruins, 5-1.

“Yes we made it out of the stadium wearing our Canadiens jerseys,” he jokes.

Though the big city and shining lights left an impression, there’s still nothing like coming home, where he’s spent his whole life, fishing, soaking up the sun, and playing goalie for the game around the corner. And his new year’s resolution?

“To fit into this Montreal Jersey with my goalie gear!”
